BEDFORD SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL: 1
Monroe Boys' Varsity Soccer returned to winning ways on Tuesday night with a convincing 5-1 win against their traditional county rivals Bedford High School.
Although the game kicked off 25 minutes late due to traffic congestion on the first day of school, Monroe came out of the blocks quickly once the game got underway. Within the first 15 minutes Talen Swinkey, Lucis Rzepa and Isaac Langerman had all rattled the woodwork. Austin Dunn finally broke the deadlock with a low drive from the edge of the box after a shot by Langerman was blocked. J'von Miller added the second with a free kick bent around the defensive wall before Xander Middleton converted a penalty given after his goal bound shot was handled on the line. Up until the break the Trojans played some of their best soccer of the season with Swinkey and Dunn combining neat touches with clever running off the ball. Miller controlled central midfield and distributed the ball with a variety of intelligent passes to both wings.
Half time: Monroe 3 -0 Bedford
In the second half Monroe continued to press their advantage and Jovanny Gallegos and Brian Palmer were a constant threat. Xander Middleton broke through and drew out the keeper before unselfishly setting up Talen Swinkey to add a fourth goal.
Bedford responded with an excellent long range effort that swerved in the wind and found the top corner of the net. Monroe's final goal came after another mazy dribble by Brian Palmer beat several defenders before he squared the ball for Gallegos to tap in.
For the Trojans Vincent Bonanni and Noah Stein had excellent games.Bonanni won the ball back on numerous occasions and Stein's powerful overlapping runs from full back created several chances as the game wore on. Manuel Diaz was again outstanding in defense with both Daniel Presa and Braden Setzler partnering him at center back. Setzler and Nick Heringhausen shared the goalkeeping duties.
