Boys Varsity Soccer vs. Dexter High School
Boys Varsity SoccerMonroe Boys' varsity soccer team chalked up another first with their 1-0 win over Dexter on Monday night. It was the first victory in 14 attempts against the Dreadnoughts. A 2-2 tie in 2022 was the previous best result. (1-12-1 All Time) The game was rescheduled after the rainout on August 27 and the Trojans wasted no time applying pressure on the hosts goal from the start. Logan Brockway, Israel Vargas and Jovanny Gallegos all had shots from long range and Brian Palmer was a constant threat. Dexter rebounded and ended the half stronger and earned a string of corners but stalwart defending by the Trojan defense and keeper Nathan Sanchez kept the goal intact.The second half was an even affair and the game looked destined for a 0-0 score line until Bryson Lane intercepted a ball on halfway, marched forward and threaded a precise ball between the central defenders to Brian Palmer who neatly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper. Boys Junior Varsity FootballThe Monroe JV football team remained undefeated (3-0) yesterday with a 34-12 victory against Ypsilanti Lincoln. Torran Simmons led the scoring with 2 rushing touchdowns and 2 extra point kicks. Grady Brooks had a rushing touchdown and a two point conversion run, while Zamir Austin returned an interception for a touchdown and Wesley Hayes scored on a kick return. The defense was led by Josh Gray, Blake Little, Logan Caudill, Landin Turner-Pomeroy, Landon Loveland, and Zyshonne Reid.

Boys Varsity SoccerMonroe Boys' soccer were shut out for the first time this year losing 3-0 at home to table topping Ann Arbor Huron on Tuesday night. The Trojans were uncharacteristically sloppy in defense and conceded two poor goals early on. For the remainder of the half the Monroe squad held their own and created several excellent opportunities. Jovanny Gallegos broke through and forced a fine save from the goalkeeper and was again denied from a free kick as his low shot was parried and saved at the second attempt. As the half time whistle loomed yet another lapse in concentration allowed the River Rats to extend their lead right on the stroke of halftime.HT 0-3 .The Trojan squad regrouped after the break and played an even half of soccer. Monroe soaked up the pressure at the back more effectively and defended stoutly and managed to get into decent attacking positions. Boys Junior Varsity FootballThe Monroe JV football team started their season 1-0 this week with a 24-6 victory over Dearborn Heights Creswood. Grady Brooks, Tavin Parkhurst, and Landin Turner-Pomeroy all had rushing touchdowns, while Turner-Pomeroy, Mason Goltowski, and Torran Simmons had rushing two point conversions. The entire defensive line logged a strong performance and Marquis Wilkerson had an interception.

Boys Varsity SoccerMonroe Boys' soccer recorded their first ever win against traditional state soccer powerhouse Ann Arbor Pioneer on Tuesday night. The historic victory was achieved despite falling behind 2-0 and suffering a torrid first half with injuries to key players Vishwas Joshi and Israel Vargas. The comeback began when Israel Vargas returned to the fray and provided a cross for Brian Palmer to head goal wards. Edwin Sanchez reacted sharply and nipped in front of the keeper to poke home the goal and get Monroe on the board. With momentum now on their side the Trojans pressed forward and tenacious Logan Brockway won a free kick in midfield.Captain Bryson Lane delivered a perfect ball into the box and fellow captain Jovanny Gallegos evaded the markers to volley home. Boys Varsity Cross CountryMonroe boys cross country won the Puddle Jumper Invite at Milan Thursday. The Trojans were led by Myles Bray and Parker Bomia finishing 1-2 in the Division 1 race. Also winning medals were Josh Riggs, Gavin Rohr, Hayden Barker, Victor LeBrun, Tyler Sweat, Derek Crum, and Jonathan Weber. Monroe's next meet is the Averill Invitational at Kensington Metropark on September 7.

Boys Varsity SoccerMonroe Boys' soccer extended their unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 5-1 victory over Ida on Saturday morning. The Blue Streaks opened the scoring midway through the first half with a long range effort by Weston Allen flew into the net. The Trojans responded with a fine goal by Israel Vargas assisted by Brian Palmer. The Trojans created numerous chances but were unable to add to their tally before the break. HT1-1 In the second half the Trojans continued to wear down their opponent and as Ida began to tire the depth of the Monroe squad began to make a difference. Both Brian Palmer and Teegan Simmons were on hand to put away rebounds after two fierce shots in quick succession by Israel Vargas were only parried by the keeper. Boys Varsity Soccer vs. Bedford Senior High School
Monroe Boys soccer were held to a 2-2 tie in a very competitive game away to Bedford High School on Thursday night. A small sinkhole at the edge of the field resulted in the game being played to the width of the lacrosse field which was safer but probably doubled the number of throw-ins and somewhat disrupted the flow of the game. Despite a slow start which allowed the home team to carry much of the play the Trojans took the lead when Tobin Becker volleyed home a long throw in by Cooper Robinson. Monroe almost added to their lead but Brian Palmer's long range shot crashed against the post and rebounded to safety. The Mules equalized with barely 3 seconds remaining in the half. Boys Varsity SoccerMonroe Boys' varsity soccer produced a dominating performance to beat Trenton HS 8-0 on Tuesday night. The Trojans got off to a flying start and scored three times in the first nine minutes. The possession, ball rotation and combination play in that spell was too much for the visitors to handle and Monroe added three more goals before half time. The Trojans pushed the score to 8-0 early in the second half and the game was ended by mercy rule. Brian Palmer contributed half the scoring with a personal tally of 4 goals. Evan Ortiz, Jovanny Gallegos, Israel Vargas and Eric Sanchez added the others. Assists for Gallegos (2) Luis Diaz Cooper Robinson, and Tobin Becker. The Trojans fell behind in the first half after a mix up in the penalty box presented Milan with an easy tap in. The Monroe squad controlled the game but were unable to break through a resolute Milan defense. HT 0-1In the second half the Trojans mounted numerous attacks and their persistence was finally rewarded when a break down the left by Brian Palmer produced a shot for Aiden Gray at the far post to score Monroe's first goal of the season. Boys Varsity TrackMonroe boys track performed well at the regional meet Friday. Teegan Simmons won the shot put and discus and was 7th in the 300 hurdles, qualifying for the state finals in all three events. Andrew Foshag was second in the 1600, also qualifying for the state finals. The 4x400 relay team of Simmons, Foshag, Chris Stein, and Deshun Richardson was 3rd, also qualifying for the state finals. Delmar Clay (shot put), Nolan Cacioppo (discus), Dshun Richardson (400), and the 4x800 relay (Reggie Geftos, Maxx Adams, Parker Bomia, Myles Bray) also won medals for the Trojans.
