Monroe wins Monroe Invitational to open season

It has been a few years since Monroe High has won its own soccer invitational, but it broke the drought Saturday. Especially notable was the strong defensive team play led by Nick Janssens, Carson Delben, Ben Bellino, and Trevor Malik, which allowed only one goal during the Invitational. Gino Assenmacher was in goal. Monroe came out very strong dominating Dearborn Crestwood 3-0 with 16 shots on goal and only allowing one. Next, Monroe defeated a physical Belleville team 3-0. In the finale, Monroe overcame a slow start to defeat Manchester 2-1. Scoring was led by Andy Buchko and Andrey Houck with two goals each. Other scorers were Jake Myers, Mitchell Meier, and Logan Amato.
