DEXTER HIGH SCHOOL: 6
On Wednesday, the Monroe softball team wrapped up the SEC Red championship for a 5th consecutive year by sweeping Dexter by scores of 7-6 and 8-7.
In game 1, Monroe trailed early, but took a 6-4 lead in the 5th inning thanks to a 2-run single by Ellie Sieler and a 3-run homer by Haley Frank, her second of the game. Defensive miscues allowed Dexter to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th, but the Trojans were able to work out of a jam, and won the game in the 8th, as Kayla Peters scored on an overthrow to second base. Frank and Sieler led the way offensively, driving in all 6 runs, and accounting for 4 of the 6 Trojan hits. Alexa Amazeen relieved Hailey Schink in the 7th and was the winning pitcher.
The three seniors, Haley Frank, Samantha Spicer, and Erica Everson, left to be honored at Senior Awards Night and MHS, and the underclassmen held their own, battling to a hard fought 8-7 win in the second game. Ellie Sieler went 4 for 4, McKenzie Peters had 3 hits and 3 RBI, Imari Sortor had 2 hits, and Kayla Peters also collected 2 hits including a triple. Hannah LaVanway pitched in relief of Alexa Amazeen and got the win.
With the sweep, Monroe now stands at 23-4 on the season, and 14-1 in SEC play.
