SALINE HIGH SCHOOL: 1

Monroe Boys soccer recorded another notable result with a well earned 1-1 tie at #11 ranked team Saline on Tuesday night. Monroe in fact scored the only goal of the night in a 75 minute game. The contest was the continuation of the suspended game (lightning) on Sept 5th. That game was stopped by the officials with Saline leading 1-0 after 5 minutes of the initial period.

Monroe was forced to reshuffle the line up with normally ever present  Austin Dunn unavailable.Bryson Lane moved in to the #6 role and freshman Aiden Gray was added to the back line. The game was a tense encounter with Monroe adopting a cautious approach, soaking up pressure and playing on the counter attack when the opportunity arose. The strategy paid off when Monroe went ahead with another poacher's goal from Vishwas Joshi in the six yard box after an assist by Brian Palmer.

Saline continued to press forward in the second half but keeper Ethan Merkle  was in confident mood and caught several crosses and safely handled a number of long range efforts. The Monroe defense was disciplined throughout and kept the Hornets on the perimeter of the penalty area. The line was only breached once but Merkle once again saved cleverly with an ostutretched leg. In the closing stages Monroe began to create their own chances and Talen Swinkey went close and Brian Palmer wriggled free of his markers and forced a brilliant full length save from the Saline keeper with only three minutes remaining.

It was a historic result again for the Trojan squad at a venue where there has been only defeats in the past. Outstanding performances across the board from all the players but especially Jovanny Gallegos and Talen Swinkey in midfield with Logan Brockway deputising for Dunn and doing a magnificent job.

Monroe now 9-4-2 on the season. Next game at Bedford on Thursday night Sept 28 at 7:00pm.
