Monroe's boys soccer team continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought 2-0 win over Ann Arbor Huron at Custer Field on Thursday evening. The Trojans began the game playing at a high tempo, winning the midfield battles and putting pressure on the Huron goal before Norberto Flores scored with an accurate shot after a pass from Mitchell Meier. The Trojans added to their lead midway through the half after Trevor Malik played a long ball beyond the defense which Miguel Diaz calmly slotted home from a very tight angle. The Trojans continued to press their advantage and Xander Middleton, Mitchell Meier and Trevor Malik all went close with shots on goal. Monroe's defense was solid throughout the half and goalkeeper Braden Setzler only had a couple of long range efforts to deal with.

In the second half Huron began to gain control of the game and Monroe was forced to defend deep in their own half. Huron's pressure eventually led to a penalty kick being awarded after a corner kick resulted in a scramble in the box. The resulting penalty was fired wide but keeper Setzler was forced to leave the field after it was apparent he had collided with the forward in the melee. Senior goalkeeper Tyler Poore returned to keep goal after a long rehab following a broken leg and he relished the opportunity saving numerous shots and dealing with a number of dangerous in swinging corners.

After a very long second half due to a number of stoppages to repair the net, treat injuries and make a refereeing change the Trojans hung on to claim a famous victory over an opponent they have only beaten once before in the 30 plus years history of the Monroe soccer program. The defense was once again outstanding and has only conceded 2 goals in nine games. Juan Jimenez, Brian Costello, Andre Houck and Matt Timiney continue to impress as a well drilled and organized unit. The next varsity game is Trenton at home on Saturday Sept 7 at 10:00. Monroe's record is now 8-0-1
