On Saturday, the Monroe varsity softball team swept SMCC by scores of 5-3 and 8-7 to run its winning streak to 15 games.
In game 1, Monroe got on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd when Ellie Sieler drew a bases loaded walk. Controversy came on the next play, when Haley Frank hit a blooper that appeared to be caught by SMCC shortstop Sammi Michael, but the ball was ruled trapped and Monroe scored 3 runs during the confusion. Michael hit a solo homer to cut the lead to 4-1, but Monroe tacked on another run on a groundout by Hailey Schink to regain the 4-run lead. Michael hit yet another homer in the 7th to bring the Kestrels within 2, but Monroe held on for a 5-3 win. Hailey Schink was the winning pitcher.
In game 2, Monroe found themselves down 6-0 going into the bottom of the 6th, when the bats woke up. The Trojans scored 7 runs in the inning, Samantha Spicer doubled in Ellie Sieler to get the scoring going. Erica Everson then grounded out scoring Haley Frank. After a single by McKenzie Peters, Hannah LaVanway reached on error scoring Spicer. Kallie Trouten delivered a clutch pinch hit double to tie the game, and then scored on a groundout by Macy Collett to give Monroe a 7-6 lead. SMCC tied the game in the top of the 7th, but Monroe ended the game when Samantha Spicer doubled, and Erica Everson delivered the game-winning single. Frank, Spicer, and Peters all had 2 hits in the game for the Trojans. With the wins. Monroe improves to 19-4 on the season.
